Mesothelioma & Asbestos Awareness

The Mesothelioma & Asbestos Awareness Center is starting a directory of spiritual resources to provide support to the cancer patients and their families who visit their site; they asked to include our parish in their directory.

The organization provides the most comprehensive mesothelioma information on the net. Mesothelioma is a nearly always fatal cancer which is caused by exposure to asbestos. Persons diagnosed with mesothelioma face an extremely difficult battle and the very real prospect of death. At this critical point in one’s life many people turn toward religion to help them cope with their suffering and to assist them in answering life’s most important questions.

In an ongoing effort to meet the needs of their visitors they have created a directory of spiritual resources.
This directory is one of the most meaningful resources their site can provide.

We were also asked to post a link to their site to help spread awareness about the organization. The link is below. Awareness of mesothelioma will lead to more research and funding so that we may one day eradicate this terrible disease.

August 15-16 we welcomed our new Deacon, Diego Ramirez, who concelebrated
                        at all the Masses at
Immaculate Conception. Deacon Ramirez was ordained July 11, 2009 in Dubuque.

COMING TO ST. WENCESLAUS

  1224 5th ST SE

    Saturday, May 2

           7:30 p.m.- Evening of Reflection/Eucharistic Holy Hour

Mark Forrest
International Irish Tenor

Inspiring the world, one person at a time

His melodic voice has filled concert halls and cathedrals world wide. He has sung inspirational hymns for luminaries such as Pope John Paul II and Mother Theresa. His soothing Broadway melodies have entertained award-winning performers including Charlton Heston and Maureen O'Hara.

Although this international Irish tenor has performed for some of the leading orators of our time, Mark Forrest is not beckoning audiences to himself, rather he hopes his listeners will hear a deeper call and attune their ears to his heartfelt message - a message that has been shaped by what many would call the tragedies in his life.

Mark Forrest's "song" is The Faith and Family Foundation, an organization he and his wife Muriel, founded in 1999 to support and encourage individuals and families with special needs. His "lyrics" are the sancity of human life at every stage and age.

Mark and Muriel's efforts to establish The Faith and Family Foundation were born out of the sorrowful death of their third baby boy - Francesco - who was diagnosed in utero with a severely compromised heart. He lived only five days, "touching more people than I ever will in a lifetime," Mark says. Their second son, John Patrick, was also born with special needs and is battling a rare nerve condition that has left him blind and confined to a wheelchair.

Yet Mark and his wife turned their tragedies into triumphs and resurrected joy from the ashes of their sorrows. They embraced their past personal despair and are now conveying hope to thousands around the globe through the Foundation.

The Foundation offers annual awards recognizing outstanding persons with disabilities, or individuals who work with or care for persons with disabilities, as well as awards to those who best exemplify the ethos of Faith and Family in a public setting.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, awarded full scholarships to study music, and educated at the Royal College of Music, Mark could allow his exceptional talent to take him world wide with Broadway touring companies. But he is committed to his own family and to his life's work sharing his music through The Faith and Family Foundation.

The Living Last Supper

SATURDAY, MARCH 28 - 6:45 p.m.

St Wenceslaus Church Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Admission: FREE

A free-will offering will be taken with proceeds going to
Linn Area Long Term Relief Coalition for flood-relief efforts.

You are invited to a worship experience that will take you inside the famous Leonardo da Vinci
painting, The Last Supper.

This drama and musical presentation is performed by a group of men from across Dubuque
County
reenacting that moment in history when Jesus tells his disciples that “one of you
will betray me”.

What began as a small group of inspired men from the Epworth United Methodist Church
(hoping that at least their wives would come to see their efforts), has grown into an annual
ecumenical ministry.  The 2009 Lenten season is the tenth year for the drama, which is both
inspirational and educational, as Jesus and each disciple make you feel like you are actually
there, in the Upper Room on that fateful night of betrayal.  The Living Last Supper Band
enhances the experience, sharing their gift of music throughout the service.  With a long
history of 50 performances for over 12,000 people, The Living Last Supper has become
a worship experience many in the tri-state area look forward to each year.

Mark your calendar and plan to join us as we prepare to celebrate Easter and the
resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Beat the winter blues and be part of Movin’ for McAuley!

Come join us Saturday, February 21st, 2009 for the 6th annual Movin’ for McAuley Mall Walk presented by Panera Bread at Westdale Mall. The Mall Walk is held to create awareness of the Catherine McAuley Center as well as raise funds to support their mission to provide the community with an adult basic education program for men and women as well as a transitional housing program for women.

Movin’ for McAuley is a morning filled with fun for all ages!  Start off the day by getting out of the cold and get in a workout from walking laps around Westdale Mall or bring the kids and make it a family fun day as everyone enjoys various activities, games, great prizes, bagels and beverages.  There is never a dull moment at action filled event!

This year, Movin’ for McAuley will host a Family Expo. We would like to give area businesses and organizations the opportunity to let the community know what is happening around town and how to get involved.  For a small fee of $20 per table for businesses and $10 per table if your group/organization is of non-profit status, you can reserve a spot on the course where you may showcase and promote your group in any manner you choose.  All we ask is that all participants provide a game, activity or some type of promotional item that may be given to all walkers at your table and that expo participants may NOT sell goods or products of any type.  Last year, more than 600 walkers came out and participated in the Movin’ for McAuley Mall Walk and we are planning for more participants in 2009.  To market to a captive audience of this size for only $20; how could you say no?

Having a problem with committing to the event?  Think of it this way…

  • The event is a commitment of no more than 2 hours
  • Since the t-shirts cost is underwritten every registrant is actually making a donation to Catherine McAuley Center and receiving a t-shirt for it.
  • No one is required to walk. Participants are welcome to walk as much/as little as want while they watch, socialize and visit vendors of the event.

Ways you can help:

Form a team!  We have special prizes for teams! Show your team spirit, wear your logo, come in costume, or make a banner! Try to challenge other departments, other offices, other co-workers to match or beat your efforts!

Listen!  We’ll be happy to have someone from the Catherine McAuley Center speak to your business about our mission and volunteer opportunities.

Thank you for your consideration, and we hope to see you at Westdale Mall, Saturday, February 21st, 2009 at 9am.  Take the challenge!
